Is he had to go get Bonino because they lost Bluger and now Bonino's gotta fit on the penalty kill and the penalty kill in my in my opinion is kind of taking that seat backwards. But is it isn't Bonino a good he blocks a lot of shots? He does. He'll block a lot of shots. He'll play the penalty kill but he still has to find a way to fit in with the guys around him, right? And Bluger was very good at that. And I think that Bonino will be okay you know winning draws in his end.
Will help. Check out this comment from Mike Lawrence. We're not a couple of the Penns trades like Bonino 30 plus in age. Is that a good thing? No, it's actually a terrible thing but the thing is the Penguins are built to have to do something in the next two to 3 years. Sid's only with the team for two more years after this.
So, let's just say it they make the playoffs and then everything status quo because chances of them either beating who knows who they're going to play in the first round because right now, in the Eastern Conference, like, in the metro anyways. Carolina's kind of falling and and the Devils are kind of coming up and actually, the Rangers, since they got Kane and Tarasenko, haven't really found their mojo yet like.
But the Rangers problem is that they score a lot. Or is, is that they, they allow a lot of a lot of points. They already have an offense. Yeah, they do but. Did they overdo it? I don't think so. It's just that when you have superstars, you gotta find the right mix and I think. Right. Paneren's trying to force it too much with King.
They'll find it. Trust me. The Rangers with that kind of talent will find. Right. They'll find it and when they do, they're going to be a force to be reckoned with. Right. If they don't, and they lose in the first round, that would be glorious. That would absolutely be great. Yeah. All of New York might be on fire at that point.
Right. Because they're we are not advocating setting New York on. No. You're absolutely not that. I'm just saying like they are they're expecting the Stanley Cup now because they got all these guys. They got all the guys they could possibly get. And they didn't even give up their young talent. Like and I'm beating around the bush here. But the that's the thing about the the the the Penguins.
The Penguins are built for now and signing guys that are in their 30s.
Probably make sense. It just makes that clip a little bit steeper when they don't have like 25 or 26 or twenty-four year olds behind it. Because now everybody's going to fall off the cliff together and say 2 years years from now, let's say they don't make the playoffs this year and they don't make the playoffs next year, Sid's probably thinking, just trade me to Colorado. I know I can probably win two cups with MacKinnon and then every all the rats jump **** Like nobody wants to stick around anymore. And that's the end of the Penguins. As we know, this team and they probably will be bad until about twenty thirty-five.
Wow. I heard there's really good talent coming out in twenty thirty-four. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, yeah, I guess it'll take to get good. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Right. Well, by that time, hopefully, we'll have all of our number one picks back. Yeah. And we'll actually have good draft picks. Yup. Yup. I love it when Steve. I love it when Steve beats around the Hansy Bush. You know, it's just I'm just I'm just rolling with it. Yeah. I'm rolling with it.
Um I I don't know that I I think that Bonino, honestly, you know, we'd like to we'd like to say these G. By the way, Benino's like 36 years old. Yeah. He's he's an old did he used to be a Penguins? Yeah, he in the back-to-back cup years. He was. He was only here during the back-to-back cup games but he was a favor. They've never lost a playoff series with Bonino in the roster. Yes, that's exactly right.
And that's my, that's my point. I think. That's why they got him. I think that Hextall actually brought him back because he was trying to bring the crowd back. Yeah. No, I agree with you. Yeah. And in the locker room. I think that, yeah, and I personally think that's a cheap move. I I think that he's not looking at, look, you're the GM. We talked about all the issues. The contract issues age of the players. All of this other stuff.
The whole you're in right now. And the the worst thing that can happen to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Regardless of how this season plays out or next. Is that Sidney Crosby leaves. Mario Lemieux did not leave. Okay? And then this may be a stretch. Although it is a little bit different now as compared to when Lemieux played. It is it is different but Sid is is he is of the mold of Lemieux. Well, look. Different style of play. There may be that and I'm not advocating.
I don't want Sid to leave, right? Right. You already signed Gino and Tanger. Yeah. For a very long time. Right. There's no reason not to keep sit around for the same period of time. Right. However, the only way maybe to get better sooner would be to get rid of Sid, get three draft picks, get a couple guys that are young who are proven commodities and start out. And start over.
Yeah. That's how teams do it. But look where the Rangers Rob McDonough.
Did they get worse? No. They actually got better. And he was their number one defenseman at the time. Like that's what you have to do. Like you have to just like first of all it's up to Sid. Sid wants to stay. He can stay for another 10 years if he wants. And I advocate for that because I think he's the best of all those guys.
But the reality is at some point in the next two to four years the Penguins are really going to suck. And they to think about what that means and how long they want to suck and if they just want to let guys just leave on their own and not get something for them. You know and and and to have a superstar like Sidney Crosby just leave and not get something for him.
That could be a problem. That could be a problem. I mean, that's how Boston got better sooner. They got rid of Ray Bourque. They send him off to Colorado. Yeah, he won he won he he won a championship with him but they got a ton in return for him. Yeah. Like that's what that's the next thing the Penguins To think about in the next two to 4 years.
Now, they can continually put that off if they keep making the playoffs. They make they make the playoffs next year. They don't really have to think about it because they're making the playoffs which makes them look like they have a chance. Okay. That's the problem. That's not the problem but that's that's the conundrum that the Penguins are in. Okay, last thing about the Pens.
Last thing about the Pens. I think it's, I think it's consensus that if they don't make the playoffs this year, Hex gone. Hex dolls will be gone. Yes. First round exit. Hex stall gone? No, not necessarily. Don't think so? No. Okay. Okay. That's. It depends on how they lose but. Yeah. Um the reality is they're either probably going to be playing against the Devils, Carolina, or Boston.
Right.
Boston is like the fastest team to a hundred points, right? Yeah. Boston's looking at a hundred and 30 points this year. Yeah. They're they're looking to maybe even break an NHL record. Mm hmm. It's. Yeah. Yeah. And they got better at the trade deadline. They went out and got Todd Bertuzzi from Detroit and they got a couple guys before that.
Lars Lars that was another interesting one like Stevie Iserman who's known as a good GM you know he traded Bertuzzi with their team actually still having an outside shot at the playoffs. Right. But he basically just realizes like By the time this team is ready to contend, we have, you know, he's not going to be there. Right. So. Right. They they're kind of, they took the move that I think the Penguins should have taken with Malkin this year.
Not to say the Malkins played poorly. He's played pretty well. No, but I understand where you're coming from and that's not necessary. Yeah, well. Pittsburgh Pittsburgh has a problem. They they hang on to players. Yeah. Uh and and they do it all. They they they sometimes they do it on the Steelers but they definitely do it on the Penguins. Yeah. Uh and the Pirates are completely opposite.
Yeah, they don't any of their young talent on they say. Really? They're not ready yet. Alright. So, I I want to move on here real quick to pit basketball only because Pitt did what we've always talked about. They pitted. They ended up losing to Notre Dame, losing to Miami. Now, they're in the ACC tournament as like the sixth seed and on the bubble, hopefully, I I would love to see them make the the the March Madness because I I I would love for us to talk about pit basketball because I just love saying the name Feder Federico. Federico. But look if they make the if they make the tournament, we'll have some fun with the tournament.
Right? Yeah. Definitely. We're going to have fun with the tournament regardless. Oh, yeah. Well, it's always more fun when the hometown. That's right. That's right. That's right. So, we are rooting for Pitt but we'll talk about them if if if they actually make it there. But they are, what we thought they were.
Is exact. That actually, that's not true. They're better than we thought they were but they ended up being what they always are.
