How Many Stanley Cups Did Mario Lemieux Win?
Mario Lemieux won two Stanley Cups as a player, in 1991 and 1992, and three more as a Penguins owner, in 2009, 2016 and 2017. That distinction explains why his name is connected with all five Pittsburgh championships.
Two Cups on the ice
The player total is two. Lemieux led Pittsburgh through the first championship era and received the Conn Smythe Trophy in both title years. Those awards recognize the most valuable player of the playoffs, rather than the regular season.
Three Cups in an ownership role
His later championship connection came through ownership. These victories belong to another stage of his relationship with the Penguins; they should not be added to his playing record as if he were still in the lineup.
How should fans compare the totals?
Start by deciding what the question measures. “How many did he win as a player?” has a different answer from “How many Penguins titles was he part of as a player or owner?” Both are useful questions when the role is stated.
This is also why a franchise championship list and an individual career résumé do not tell precisely the same story. One follows the team across decades; the other follows a person’s changing contribution to it.
